Dorothy Lucille Adkins Lewis is the daughter of James Henry and Mary Margaret Dawson Clover Adkins. She was born north of Cambridge KS and as a very young child she remembers riding the buggy 4 miles into Cambridge with her father during high waters and also eating the cherries off her Mother's new hat. During her youth she would make trips to Sapulpa Oklahoma with her Mother to visit her Dad who had secured work in the area. He lived a short distance from his parents in a lease house and these were the first memories Dorothy has of James Columbia Adkins. On one of these visits as a young teen she remembers her Aunt Ola taking her to an Indian Reservation for a Powwow and it being a little scary. Ola lived with her parents at this time and was raising Jack. During these frequent visits Dorothy became acquainted with her father's family and remembers playing with Jack as her Mother fished nearby. When she was sewing on Lucy's sewing machine one time she ran the needle through her finger. This was a very memorable moment. Dorothy's last memory of James Columbia Adkins was at Della's home where she was taking care of James Columbia after Lucy's death. Dorothy married Emory Lewis in 1929 and they have five children all born in the Burden area.
